kids and death of animals

went in the garden today to hang some washing out and noticed that my sons guinea pig was in the pen dead.we had him for quite a while .i went back in the house and told me that his pet had died.he went out had a look at it and with out being asked went to the shed and gotb a spade .
he choose a spot and started digging i asked him if he wanted some help his reply was no it was my pet and im going to bury him.
he dug a 2 and a half foot hole .wrapped the guinea pig in kitchen towel and buryied him when .i asked if he wanted a hand again and he refused .he finished up by puting a slab over where he buried him so that another animal couldnt dig him up and he wont be dug up acidently.
my son is 9 years old .and by his reaction he made me proud he was upset  but he did what had to be done.
i have always brought him up that if he was to have animals then he must be prepared to lose them.and accept that no matter how much you love them death will happen.
although not nice i think it is important to expose kids to death in animals.and not shy away from it.

That was very grown up of your son - I get mad with people who buy a new pet and try to pass it off as the old one, better to be honest from the start.  Your son clearly understood that death is something that sadly happens....

Yes, i agree, we shy away from death but its something we all have to deal with in life.
The more its talked about and understood (however you want to portray it i.e religeously or scientifically) , the easier it'll be to come to terms with it.
