You can't get much more cruel (in human terms anyway) than the production of milk. The cows give birth to a calf which is then taken away virtually straight away and sometimes shot because the bull calves are useless to the farmer. In other cases the calves are left with the mother for a week or so to bring the production of milk to the fore and then the mother and calf are separated. The calves are either shot or exported depending on whether they are of any use to the dairy farmer. I live about 150 yards from a small dairy farm and the cries from the mothers looking for their young goes on for about a week after their calves are taken from them. All this just so we can have our tea white.
