Is all graffiti bad ?
Some graffiti artists are extreamly good ,there work often looks better than the original wall.
Most graffiti is scribbles and crude messages .whats your veiw on graffiti?
rosco

It's very, very rare that graffiti is any good - mostly they are just tags sprayed mostly anywhere with no artistic value at all.
I think that the owner of the surface being painted should have a say in what goes there - if they don't, it is graffiti no matter how 'interesting' it may appear to some.

All graffiti is art.

You can see an example of graffiti at 4 Phelps Parade, Calne.

There are some really good graffiti artists in the town who don't get the chance to show their work.

Are all phallic symbols drawn on shop fronts really art though? Laughing

The unground passage ways in chippenham by the cinema had some fantastic drawing on them before they were filled in.
i like seeing good graffitti .if it was more controlled it would brighten up quite a lot of places.

at Graffiti (singular: graffito; the plural is used as a mass noun) is the name for images or lettering scratched, scrawled, painted or marked in any manner on property. Graffiti is often regarded by others as unsightly damage or unwanted vandalism.

The law regards it as vandalism when its done to property owned by someone other than the artist and as stated above it can be anything from a scratched name on a tree to a mural on the side of a house

I'd rather that planners included graphic designers or artists in municipal projects, such that they didn't create blank walls of grey or white but more colourful murals or designs.  I briefly saw the graffiti in the Chippenham passage and it just made it look like any deprived inner city subway all over the country.

When I decided to open my shop in Phelps Parade I invited the John Bentley School to send some art students to graffiti the shop walls.

The 4 who came and worked for 4 days in the shop produced some great graffiti. What was pleasing was the number of people who came and looked at their work. This included their mates at the JBS but also pensioners who also expressed delight at the images.

The process of making graffiti is as structured as any piece of art, the graffiti artist does not slap a bit of paint on a wall. Any good graffiti makes a statement normally about social issues. I admit some of the messages need to be pointed out to me as I find I do not speak the same language as some of them.

I would like the town council to build a wall in the town centre where griffiti artist can display their skills without fear of favour.

We are lucky in Calne in that there is not a graffiti problem. There was some which had to be removed from the Leisure Centre walls but in general Calne is graffiti free.

I agree whole heartedly Peter. A place for an expression of art wold be good for Calne.

The problem though i think is that, part of the challenge of graffiti, is to show it where it should not be, we were all a little rebelious in our youth, it is part of learning independance....... However think of Gaudi , he always had permission to colour up a building ..... SOME youth of today do not understand respect (as they have been given none themselves probably) ,so they cause damage to property through vandalism.

I would not like it sprayed across the front of my house.......... not without my permission.
Very Happy

Chepfer, my idea for a graffiti wall allows for artists of any age to put their TAG on it, but it could be repainted every 6 or 12 months to allow new work.
The better pieces could be photographed and copies sold!

There are surfaces in the town which could be covered and I have suggested permission is sought. I hope it will be so some day!

I am making my 2nd visit to Barcellona during half term and Gaudi's work never fails to inspire!

a wall would be a excelent idea for local gaffiti artists.

i take it from the second comment you have never seen the benches at the park by school road then.to be fair it hasnt been added to in quite a while and im happy to say that the trees have not been damaged either.

There is tonight a flash of excellent graffiti in a tunnel in London done by Banksie and a load of his mates from as far away as Brasil, USA and Australia.  Some of it could go in the Louvre.

There is a piece on the bus shelter opposite the cinema in Chippenham reckoned to be a Banksie.

I like all art when it's good, or makes me laugh or says something profound or relevant...
Peter Dolman

The chippenham graffiti is not an original banksy work but just an imitation, looks like someone has cut out a print and stencilled it on.

On second thoughts though would that make it a banksy?

Peter:

Graffiti in Calne could easily be done under some of the bridges without much controversy.  There is one very ugly grey area under Prince Charles Drive where the Marden Brook flows under.

It is an idea to make a mural there.  I wonder, would you be interested in getting involved when the Marden restoration project gets underway?
Peter Dolman

possibly but my family claim they don't see enough of me now. I have some contacts with some 1st class grafitti artists I can arrange a contact for you
