Hunting is there a need

People used to hunt for food to survive in todays modern world is there really any need to hunt ?
rosco

It's now a sport so like any other sport there's no real 'need' to do it.

There is a need to hunt to control fox/deer population. Both these animals cause wide spread damage to crop's and live stock and are a huge pest to farmer's.

I think there's better ways to control than hunting if that's really what you want to do. Can't think what damage foxes do to crops or deer to live stock and, anyway, they were here first!

I dont agree in hunting with dogs .thats just barbaric but there sometimes is a need to cull certain animals liken rabbits .mainly if they have mixy.
i dont gree in killing foxes the damage what they do is in there nature.
what i dont get is why people can say that foxes and other animals is distructive .but they dont agree in killing the badgers who not only spread tb but do hell of a lot of damage .

Its all about perception Local Lass if a creature is consider cute and cuddly people tend to be against hunting it however if it isnt which is the case with most insects for example then we call in the exterminator. And what about slugs they were here first but I bet most gardners take some action to cull their population

I don't know any farmers who cull rabbits just because they have mixy - they tend to die pretty quick of their own accord. Rabbits are shot because they are a complete pest not only to the arable farmer but also to the livestock farmer as well. 7 Rabbits will eat the same amount as a sheep in one day (according to the shooting press) and as you can imagine will, combined with their famous breeding, devestate crops. They are also a risk to farmers of live stock, especially cows who can break their legs by putting their feet down one of the holes in the field which can sometimes be as much as twenty feet out into the field.

Foxes are controlled for financial reasons - what right minded farmer is going to risk a field full of young lambs to a couple of foxes who would love nothing better than kill a dozen lambs and take just the one kill back to its den. Shooting estates will also kill foxes to protect their financial outlay of pheasants and partridge or just to protect the shooting stock when they are nesting, which is all carried out on the ground and not up trees. I personally don't see the point in killing foxes on arable farms where a fox can be a usefull ally in combatting rabbit populations.

Badgers are an absolute nuisance in some areas. Not only do they have huges setts at the edges of fields just right for livestock to fall down they also provide the link between TB and cows according to the Government scientists. Because they have no other predators apart from man, they are Britains largest native land carnivor, they thrive. They exist on not only insects, bugs and berries but also hedgehogs, groundnesting birds and their eggs. Where they are a nuisance you can apply for a licence from DEFRA to remove them from your land - but you have to have a very good reason. I don't think it will be too long before this country sees a cull of this species to dent their numbers.

Grey squirrels should be wiped out in this country because they should not even be here. They are an absolute pest that not only pushes out our native Red Squirrel but they also cause huge damage to forestry and birdlife. The American Signal Crayfish is another species that needs eradicating from these shores - they are very tasty to eat which is very encouraging news for gourmets.
