GrafittiA topic which has been discussed before but is now to the fore again.
I am a supporter of grafitti as a art form and when it is done with respect to others.
I would like to see the council build a wall in the town, near the centre, where grafitti artist can display their work. This would encourage those who want work in that medium and hopefully mean that wanton vandlism becomes a thing of the past.
It might also be something that others may want to come an see, providing a benefit to our beleaguered shops!

There is a wall in Midsomer Norton that has been dedicated to graffiti. It is very colourful and I should imagine that it keeps changing with everyone able to add their artistic touches.
What, in graffiti terms, would be acceptable or unacceptable to draw/spray on a wall? There is obviously going to be the usual large phallic symbols, Nazi swastika's and racist comments scrawled on it at some time or another so where would you draw the line (excuse the pun )?

we are now talking about censorship, in strictly artistic terms I am against it. In realitythere does have to be some form of censorship but who would be the censor?

I would imagine any form of censorship would greatly undermine a work of art as it should be presented. There may be the philistines who would object to seeing a 10 foot phallus adorning a newly decorated wall but that in itself is a work of art.
There was a programme on a few years ago titled "what is art" that argued that being paid for art isn't art in a spontaneous form but merely a work piece. People who create art for the love of it (a graffiti artist perhaps) produce art from the heart and are not influenced by the money aspect.
It's a good question though: What is art?

i saw that to gtb and that sort of graffiti is disgusting.you also put about the wall being changed why?is they had a wall what people could do then it should be a graffiti wall what represents calne and stays that way.
in the old tunnels in chippenham they had trains along them which looked fantasic.if graffiti got to be done then it should be in a good way.

How about a wall at the scateboard park.
I go down there quite a bit with my 5 yr old and it seems quite well used (though it does need some attention).
The concrete is covered in quite a bit of graffitti already and looks in place (if you know what i mean).
You'll not stop the kids from spraying the town centre though ..... it's a sign of there rile against society in general ...... those kids 'll not spray on a wall .... but would spray any building next to it !!
