Mine is in the ground now. Usually planted about the 15 October in my area. It seems to thrive in the cold winter. Here is my experience.

Garlic was pulled today and the area planted with two rows of lettuce and one row of Joi Choi for later season use. "Durgan's Method" of planting small seeds is explained with pictures.

Two garlic plants did not have the snake seed head (scapes) removed, and these were noticably smaller than the other bulbs. All the other bulds were about the same size. These are slightly smaller than the crop of last year. This is attributed to insufficient watering. The quality is superb generally, and all would be marketable in the commercial world.

Allium sativum
Common Names: garlic,hardneck garlic, rocambole.
Family: Amaryllidaceae (amaryllis Family)

The snake seed pod (snake or scape)was removed today. Removing the snakes allows plant energy to produce slightly larger cloves. The snakes should be removed before they straighten out, which they will do after a few days of growth.

The plants will be pulled about 5 July 2007.

I just plant the cloves and ignore them. The nutrients is just compose in the soil. They are probably the easiest vegetable to grow, since they will grow anywhere. Growing in the greenhouse is probably a bit of overkill.

Growing in the greenhouse is probably a bit of overkill.

why is it?i read that you can put the pots out side as long as they are protected from cold winds.i thought the green house would be perfect for them

Garlic can take hard winters. My area goes down to minus 15 with snow and winds and the garlic thrives.

Garlic

Garlic is the most hardiest of the onion family plant individual cloves outside now but buy a variety specifically to be grown in the UK not shop bought bulbs they are bred for warmer climates. You can start them in pots if you want it stops the birds pulling them out.

Can you just plant the garlic you find in the supermarkets ? or is it the seeds you need from the heads ?

in the summer you can use the ones from the super market.but because of the cold weather you should buy from the garden centres .for best results.as there are different varitys of garlic for different time of year.
from what i have read up on it is not a very nice looking plant but if planted next to runner beans it will deter black fly and many more pests from the garden.

in the lot i brought and planted today there was 3 bulbs which i got 36 cloves out of .hopefully all 36 will come out
