gardening club showwas held on sat at the town hall, although it was up on entrys from last year there it was relitivly small show.but the entrants were good.
however i would have to say some of the decisions were so wrong.
apparently they have new judges this year who i would think didnt read the book.
for examble there was a catagory for other vegatble and someone entered celery it was the only entry yet it got second???
in the book the catergary was a certain varity of marigold the one what one it wasnt even the varity it asked for.???
in the other craft section the winner was what looked like a goose eg with trikets glued on to it something which a 6 year old could do.also in that catergary was a a carved childs chair which must have taken ages to make yet come second.
another poor decision was that in one of the apple catergarys exibit was disQUIfyed because it had a little leaf on which is something what has been asked for in the last 8 years.
i have been going to these shows since i was about 8 years old and they are nothing like they used to be .if they continue like they are then i should think they would stop pretty soon.it would help if they were open more to the public rather than just the gardening club.it is a great event but needs more support.

As a qualified flower and veg judge you can give a second if you feel the exhibit is not a good example of that veg/flower. Some judges will give prizes for trying especially at small shows where people have made an effort to put something in.
It gets very hard at big show where you are marking on points. Qualified judges are now very hard to get and we do it for the love of it.
Its very unusual to ask for a specific variety of plant usually species.
Apples should have a picked stalk not cut but with no leaves attached but can be displayed with leaves.
I agree they should be open to everyone. Club shows can be very biased towards certain individuals. I have had hate mail from a village show I was helping out at due to sickness of another judge who always gave a certain person first prize.
Always remember the judges decision is final.
But most of all don't be afraid to exhibit and just enjoy your garden dont make it a chore to do.

quite agree martin the judges decision is final but when they award something first prize what is not even the requested entry it does make you wonder.and it also puts people off entering.
even the photograph section was poor this year.
