Food and you?

What are your food habits?
Is it important to you that you only buy organic?
Does the lifestyle of the animal you are eating matter?
Local lass

I must admit i dont always buy organic.and my meat is meat i dont really look if its free range. If im honest i go for what ever is on offer or what i fancy.I find organic far to overpriced for my liking.
Bear

If I like the taste then I will buy it again and it matters not what it is or where it's from. The price will matter because none of us have unlimited wealth but that is the only criteria.
Kizzy

I would like to eat more organic and free range but the cost can be quite high compared to the non. If it was only a penny here and there then yes I would make more of a concious effort to eat organic and free range.

For example eggs - if I am in sainsburys I will buy their basics 15 for £1, their free range is something like £1.75 for 6. That's a difference of 22p per egg. If I am in the vicinity I will buy the 12 for £1 free range eggs from the market stalls or veg shops.

I would like to shop more at local farm shops and butchers, but I would have to travel alot more to do my shopping. So I only go to them if I am in the area shopping for something else
Clunk

I dont care what I eat providing it isn't spaghetti bolognaise.
I couldnt care less where it came from. I dont think it is really important. All this organic rubbish that has been brought in over the past few year, I think, is just hype. What have we been eating for the past several hundred thousand years? 4,000 years ago, we used to eat nothing but raw meat. 500 years ago, we drunk nothing except mead. We have survived this long. What does it matter now?

God I'm on my soap box today

My main source of protein is soy beans. Every ten days I cook 6 cups of dry beans. I boil gently for 7 hours in water and add a bit of molasses for colour and about a cup of sugar to improve the taste for me. The mixture is then blended to a smooth texture and put in liter jars. I get four jars from 6 cups of dried beans. This lasts me for about 8 days.

Each morning for breakfst I eat a cup and a half cold from the refrigerator. For starch, I eat a l bowl of large flake oats cooked for two minutes in the microwave. I have been doing this for 30 years.

I am not fanatical about food, but must have my soy beans and oats to start the day. Usually later in the day I will have whatever is offered, but usually only two meals per day. I drink the "juice" described at various times during the day.

To get a large variety of fruit this depicts my procedure. This is just one sample each mixture is different.

http://xrl.us/ujtn

The product may be consumed as a liquid or simply eaten with a spoon depending upon the consistency of the mixture. Some people prefer to masticate, but I prefer to simply drink the end product.

Select RAW; pineapple, peppers, oranges, grapefruit, carrots, bananas, mellon, cranberries frozen or fresh, strawberries, raspberry, blueberries, lettuce, spinach, peaches, kiwi, nectarine, plums, broccoli, grapes, tomato, pear, and in the summer I utilize any garden vegetable available. Bean sprouts are not particularly suitable, since the end product is overwhelmed by its flavour.

Skin thinly (I don't trust using the skin, since I am somewhat concerned about herbicide and pesticide residue) and, cut into reasonable size pieces and put into the common blender, add the necessary amount of water to blend to an even consistancy. Usually I make a one or two litre quantity at one time, and wrap the remaining fruit and keep in the refrigator until needed.

I have been doing this many years, and consume far more fruit and vegetable than I ever would were the fruit eaten individually. Also, the variety is much greater. Usually I eat or drink a litre of the mixture daily. The taste takes on the flavour of the prominent fruit used; in my case, usually pineapple or mellon, and the colour varies considerably from red, green, brown, blue, and all shades between. For a refreshing cold drink in the summer, sometimes I throw a few ice cubes in the blender with the mixture. Over the years I have added most fruits or vegetables, whatever is available at the time.

You must be kidding! Canadians seldom eat soy beans. Too many Canadian's waddle from one fast food joint to the next one. Tim Hortin's donuts, which is junk food if not one step up by being toxic, is one of peoples favourite take-outs.

Personally, I consider the Japanese to have the best overall diet in the world. There is some evidence to support this with their life expectancy being probably the highest in the world. Soy beans are amongst the best vegetable food in fhe world, and the Japanese partake of them fairly often. Soy beans are the King of the dried beans, but all dried beans are beneficial, as are the pulses.

I suggest the NA diet slowly kills people; in spite of the fact that for the first time in human history almost every food choice is available.

People drink canned mass produced juice, which is mostly water with a vitamin pill added. Not my quote.

Old ways die hard in this society of instant gratification. People sample some "touted beneficial food" and expect next day results This is simply not the case. It takes several weeks before the effects of a diet change are noticed.

I could go on and on, but will stop here.

A little off topic. I might add my little dog gets a diet produced by myself. This is:

A playing card portion of frozen liver cut up RAW.
A piece of lamp stewing meat RAW, about one inch square.
One canned sardine each day.
One tablespoon of my home produced juice.
One RAW egg on top.

This is her daily ration. She maintains her weight and is active and alert. At least I know what she is eating. I might add that she walks 5 km every morning winter and summer.

England is more aware these days.although like the americans and canadians some do live on fast food.people on the whole has got lazy insted of making it there selfs its so much easier just to ring up a number.here we have the fish and chip shops which you cant beat the chips out of but where we live which to you i guess is a small town there is around twenty takeaway shops these are mostly kebabs, indian, chiense and fish and chips.

as for the dogs diet its a good diet fo rthe dog i sometimes give my cats raw liver.people often forget that dogs like cats are pure hunters and need other stuff than canned food.

Admittably. BMI is not all things to all people, but probably a reasonable reference. We must start somewhere.

Hey, I am not a fanatic. But over the last fourty years I travelled throughout the world, mostly NA. Years ago I noticed the fattening up of people in the USA. Now there is no difference between Canadians and Americans.

I tend to blame the over-weight trend on the rise of fast food outlets, and prepared commercial food in the supermarkets, cooking shows on TV, amongst other things.
MacDonalds, KFC, Wendys, Tim Hortons, Burger King, Harveys to name a few are repulsive to me, but I do eat there periodically when travelling if absolutely necessary. Reduction of excessive Fat Sugar and Salt should be the aim. This does not mean one should not enjoy food. All it means is a change in mind- set and habits.

When my five children left home around 20 years of age, none were over-weight. Now three of the five are more thn pleasantly plump. What happened? I take great delight in telling them that when they were under my care there were no fat kids.

I might add that one lives in Japan, and she is healthy, active, and fit. This I attribute to the lack of easily accessible junk food establishments.

so basically, you wish to force your children to be thin against their wills. Is it a superiority complex?

First of all am I to assume that superiority complex is harmful, not knowing anything about the complex?

I don't know a parent who doen't wish their children to be fit, active, and healthy. Thin is hardly an option with our present eating habits. Overweight is a major health problem throughtout the Western World. To pretend the problem doesn't exist is burying one's head in the sand.

That said and done, your response to the post lacks substance. What is your point, other than the knee jerk comment?
Local lass

i would love to be thin
daffy

only you can do that ! eating is an addiction like alcohol or ciggerettes is ,people eat more than they should for a whole variaty of reasons  ,greediness ,boredom ,comfort etc.
i know as a kid we wasnt allowed to leave the table till we ate every thing on our plate even if your guts ached and was about to explode ,waste not want not and all that .
i would never force my kids to eat all there dinner if they didnt want to but they wouldnt get any thing else later on .
i think alot of people who have weight problems and iam not on about the odd 1/2 stone over weight its more sicological .look at that bloke who weighed 60 stone a first glance at him and you thought what a fat git  but when you heard what he had been through as a child he used food for comfort ,people like that need helping ,where is the help for obese ? they have  help for drug users  and  alcohol abusers .
Bear

Quite right Daffy speaking as a morbily obese person the only time I have been offered any help, and then only in the form of "youmust go on a diet" has been since medical things have started to go wrong.
daffy

i dont think being told to go to the gym or going swimming is the answer ,if your big the last place you want to go is swimming they would call green peace and get you thrown back in the sea ,or going to the gym where thin people is working out and your close on having a heart attack on the tred mill .just being more active in every day life will make a differance its a whole life change us fatties need,  not a 3 mth membership to the gym.
we should start a walking group !would anybody be interested ?
i go with a couple of friends once a week 630pm till about 8pm we walk in town ,around the country lanes along the cycle path where ever the mood takes us ,put the world to rights along the way it beats meeting up in a pub and sitting on our butts.
Bear

I dont know Daffy the pub does sound tempting
