Exclusive news for Calnetalk.com - Calnes New FlagI have some breaking news for the site .......
I just wanted to announce to you all that the design for the new flag for Calne has been won by myself.
I wont make the design public quite yet but you will be seeing it very shortly.
The design beat hundreds of others and was chosen by the Town Mayor, A senior representitive of RAF Lyneham, The church leaders of Calne and the town councillors.
I am incredibly proud and before you all saw it wanted you to read my vision statement behind the thoughts of the design ..... not everyone will like it, as usual ....... but i think it's great.
Here goes...........
Explain the ideas behind your design:
Having lived in the town my whole life and seen many changes for the better over recent years, I truly believe the design of a new Flag for Calne should be something Striking, Modern and symbolic.
It should be an emblem representing where our town has come from, offer pride in what it has become and inspire the community to believe in its future.
And so the idea behind my design was born.
My design is based around the theme of Calne and its reason for being here.
“The Blue segment”, which is a really important and large section symbolises the river marden.
One of the main reasons our town developed here in the first place is the river and without it Calne possibly may not have been conceived and it is also thought that the word Calne comes from the Celtic meaning for meeting of rivers.
“The Green segment” on the left signifies the land and geography in which Calne is situated and it’s link with Wiltshire.
The natural grasslands and agricultural landscape of which our part of Wiltshire is renowned, feature heavily in Calne’s past and future and has been part of its making.
“The White stripe” that runs from top to bottom represents two things; 1. Our link with Wiltshire and its own flag
2. The Chalk and sheep.
The sheep that graze on the chalk downlands developed our town into one of the most successful woollen town’s in England in the middle ages and the wonderful church and mills that still exist are here because of this.
“The Golden Circle” represents a moment in history that put Calne on the world map, the discovery of Oxygen in doctors pond.
The circle is a modern symbol representing the continuation of life and i have tried to allow it to encompass all the sections of the flag, binding together its elements and reinforcing its meaning.... That Calne has had a good past and will continue to have a great future. [/color]

Well done, Chepfer!!
As soon as the flag is officially announced we could, if you'll let us , have it as our forum header instead of the old photograph.

well Chepfer I now know who you are, congratulations on the design which I did see briefly at Monday evenings council meeting. There was a photocopy available for all the town councillors.
I see no resaon to dislike it and it is distinctive and easy to identify.
