I've had some generic leaflets through the post from most of the parties about the Euro elections.

The Green Party candidate for the SouthWest (including Calne) is Ricky Knight, he's a school teacher from Devon and has been out campaigning around the Southwest over the past weeks. I met him at the Box Revels on Monday and was very impressed with him.

Because the European Elections are done on Proportional Representation, the Greens are expected to do very well in these Euro elections.

You can find out more about Ricky here:

gibraltar???

wow didnt know that was in our area

what a joke

hows a person meant to cover such an area (cornwall devon gloucestershire wiltshire somerset bristol and gibraltar)

no wonder weve had nothing here about the elections

well that has certainly helped me make my decision who to vote for this week
Peter Dolman

yeah not sure why Gibraltar is linked with the south west perhaps we are the nearest as the crow flys!

I am in favour of PR but the system in place for the european parliament means that candidates don't realy engauge with the voters, it needs to be changed.

Its also a shame that the allowances scandal (it had to happen though) came out when the parties should be discussing the issues relating to the european elections as like it or not the big decisions come from europe at the moment.

Watching "Have I got news for you" recently Ian Hislop hinted that the MEP allowances made ours look positively tame.
The UKIP leader apparently has claimed in the region of £2,000,000 over the last 4 years (hope I got the figures right). If that is correct it make the figures our MP's have been claiming to look positively pedestrian.

Perhaps there should be a reform of the European Parliament but perhaps after we have had our referendum over the Lisbon Treaty (Constitution).

ps I am also against the european single currency for reason already disclosed.

Expenses scandal hits EU waste campaigner Jackson

European packaging waste champion Caroline Jackson has become embroiled in the expenses scandal after it emerged she paid her husband £22,500 to produce a leaflet on waste management.

Jackson, who is the Conservative MEP for South-West England, was reported to have paid her husband Robert the fee for his help in producing the 15-page pamphlet, which was published in 2006.
