Discovering Roman CalneDicovering Roman Calne.
There is a talk in the Heritage centre at 7pm on wednesday 24th September about Ancient Calne.
All of the local leading experts will be there.
They are asking people to bring any finds they may have made in calne and have them examined.
There will be a talk and then a discussion on how they can take the project forward. They are looking for ideas, suggestions and places to excavate and get the local calne people involved, eventually forming a group of people who have a real interest in the towns history.
Sounds like a real interesting evening ....i'll be going !.

Great Attrebates, GTB ... do you know any more about the Studley villa.
I knew it was there ... theres also another one on chilvester hill as well as remains in the black dog valley.
If you know any more about the Studley site , then i'd love to hear more .... think it was on the site of the farm wasn't it ?
Also theres a villa site near the lake at bowood.
Thats what this evening is all about ... the Calne area has alot of roman evidence surrounding it, that has not been investigated . They are tring to piece things together and find roman evidence in Calne, as they think it was the centre for all these outlying villa's being next to the river at a crossing point etc......

I've never heard the ghost story before.
There was two skeletons dug up in the 1960's opposite the sawmills at Studley and these were believed to be of Roman origin. At Abbey Farm in Stanley, there is a barn that used to contain a mosaic floor but I'm not sure if this mosaic was from the Roman period or for the Abbey that was pulled down in the 1540's.
The land behind the sawmills stretching all the way to Forest Gate belongs to Bowood, Chepfer.

His hearts in the right place though ... nice guy !
Yes the alter is still there, in the barn at the back or it was about 5 years ago!.
"Finding roman calne"
The evening was a complete success with excess of 50 people turning up, they only had about 10 chairs prepared.
Thay gave a brief history of the calne area in roman times and said that there are about 300 known roman settlements in the calne area to date but they think Calne was possibly the centre of it's activity.
Everyone was given a finds bag and asked to look in there gardens for pottery, coins, anything that looked interesting really and bring them to the next eveing in october, where they will be identified and mapped and recorded.
It's a real interesting project and if you know anyone interested in calnes history ..... ask them to come down ..or pass on my details and i'll givethem dates and info !
Have a look a at the following link to the projects blogspot which will be updated soon !
