Derry Hill

Just found this on the Police website:

SPEEDING - CHURCH STREET DERRY HILL

Church Road Derry Hill has been reduced to a 20 mph speed limit, and traffic calming humps have been installed. Since these measures have been put in place, residents are still complaining that traffic is exceeding the 20 mph speed limit. The NPT will be carrying out high visibility foot and mobile patrols, along with speed checks at random times, and will deal with any offences disclosed

When was a 20mph limit put in place then??

And while we are on the subject, how come the council had all that money to put those blasted humps and chicanes all up Church street but didn't have enough money to fill in all the pot-holes and cracking in the road?? Perhaps they thought the pot-holes would create some kind of inverted hump to further hamper a driver's progress. I'm just glad I don't live in Derry Hill because those humps would really annoy me (even more than they do now!!)

Apart from big hump my car is just wide anough to miss those humps.they really are a pain in the rear and very danergous at night.whats worse is some of the stupid people who park on the hums or on the bits where you have to weave.
another thing i would have top say about derry hill aprt from the fact its became a very expensive lego town is how on earth did the planners get away  with the cross roads if you have ever gone from derry hill to turn in to calne then in a car you can see anything cos they have put a bollard where you look.the problem being is that many of the cars have to poke there nose out on the main a4to see what is coming.sooner or later there will be a very nasty accident there,

I think theres an application submitted to turn all the road leading off the A4 and A3102 through calne into 20mph zones !

first of all, with all the speed bumps along the road, you dont get much chance to speed up so I dont see how there can be lots of people still going to fast.

2nd, the condition of the road surface is shockingly bad. Some months ago a news story reported that one local council in the UK was not filling in pot holes, so that drivers would have to slow up - a sort of natual road calming.

Another more recent story reported on the real reason behind traffic calming - when you are going slow, you will use more fuel, so you have to fill up more often - which means, more tax to the goverment. Over a few cars this wouldnt add up to much, but multiply by thousands of cars - 365 days of the year, and the extra tax you pay on the extra fuel you buy must add up.

The road though Derry Hill has no signs warning of speed bumps. How can this be?

As for the main junction with the A4 road, I understand the need to make it safer by changing the design, but what I find ironic is that the stretch of A4 involved is a national speed limit (60mph). Why was this not cut to 50 or even 40mph? As for the new design, I see that approach from the Calne side is reworked, but approach from the Chippenham side is more or less unchanged - its still a straight run through to Calne - nothing to make drivers ease off the power a bit.

I agree about the speed bumps being to far apart. My car goes between the two humps easily! I did not realise that speeding was ever an issue there, but I suppose a lower speed limit near the school is a good idea.

have noticed more people are going down the bottom of the hill of the a4 and turning left to get backup on that road insted of using derry hill as a rat run.

Sorry, but on what planet does driving slower increase fuel consumption?

The problem arises at night time when certain people park in front of the humps which have a white triangle on them, forcing you to drive onto the opposite side of the road and over the hidden hump. If you don't know the road too well you will hit that hump at 20mph plus sending every loose object plus driver and passengers in the car airborne. It would be interesting if there has been any legal test cases where a speed hump, which is not correctly identified, has caused damage to a car or injuries to the occupant of the car. Would you fancy driving something like a Ferrari or other type of low riding car over them?? Who would be to blame then - it is on a public highway after all?

I think the road calming chicanes (like by the church) work better than the speed humps because at least your vehicle is not being thrown around a bit as you travel over them. If I lived in Derry Hill I would have started a petition to get the horrid things removed by now!

yes it does. For a start - going over speed bumps, and road calming in general means you will be using the low gears rather than the high gears. You will also be changing gear a lot more often. In addition, you will be picking up speed, then slowing, then going faster, then slower. All of which drastically increases fuel consumption and increases pollution (CO2).

according to the gazettes road watch there was a accident on church road this morning.
