Could you kill and eat a wild animal?

Are you a budding Ray Mears? Could you kill, cook and eat a wild rabbit, pigeon or deer?
kathy27

if i really had to then for the sake of my family, i could!
i couldn't however eat one of my pets
Geddi

yes. Have done, would do again.  Even domestic animals.

Seems to me a tad hypocritical to be willing to eat meat and yet refuse to take part in the killing of the beast.  Bit like politicians who start wars and invade foreign lands, yet their children wont be anywhere near the carnage.

I can eat it but i couldnt kill it.I certainly could not rear it and kill it.

I have done it many times. I think if you are going to shoot a pheasant (or any animal for that matter) you should also pay it some sort of respect by having the knowledge of picking and drawing the bird plus making a great meal from it. I don't feel any guilt from taking rabbits, pigeon, pheasant or partridge when I know that they will all have a culinary use. The River Cottage programmes gave an insight into the ethical treatment of animals and it is something which I totally agree with.

my ex used to go fishing and shooting, it was then left for me to pluck and gut and cook it, so that part i dont mind. Like i said i know i could if i had to.

I have picked and drawn every game bird apart from grouse. I have also dressed out Deer, Rabbit and Hare. If you don't have the stomach to gut an animal then don't shoot the thing!

It's not so much having the stomach to do it more having the knowledge but if I was shown how I dont think it would be a problem and as you said if you kill an animal you should at least have the decency to eat it.

yeah, i could murder a pigeon!

Could you kill and eat a wild animal. yes.
As a kid, my step dad used to snare rabbits (bloody cruel) as this was the only meat we would have due to being in a large family and being skint. couldn't eat a rabbit now though, been put off them for life. Bit different with fish though, when you are surrounded by them (I'm from the I.O.W), why not catch and eat them, especially when Bass costs so much these days.
A pigeon I wouldn't (never liked the idea, too small!), as I keep the damn things! However, I am tempted to breed pheasants purely for eating!
Deer, yes if I had a gun licence!(sorry to you bambi fans!)
I think that any animal, as long as it is killed quickly and humanely as possible, and is for the table, then there is no issue really. When an animal is killed soley for so called sport, then that is totally different.
Sticky

I have killed them cooked them and most certainly eaten them and can only agree with the sentiments expressed here already and am very pleased to read this in this day and age.

I am not so sure there will be so many of us in years to come as most of today’s youth believe milk and meat come from a supermarket and do no connect in anyway the animal in a field to the food they actually eat!.
