I have two composts on the go.And saves me a great deal of space from my bin.YOu would be surprised what you can compost.does anyone else compost?

we have a compost bin AND a green cone for waste food.

You can get one for about £20.

Put in ALL your waste food (including bones etc) and it will rot down to water and nothing else....

We've had ours a few weeks, its going well so far.

How do you get rid of grass cuttings? We only have a lawn, so the compost bin is full of grass cuttings and is turning into slurry... how do I stop this???

if you are only feeding the compost bin grass cutting then it will turn in to slurry.

it should help you .i have the oppersite problem to youi feed my compost bin to much plants,hedge trimming i have to collect the grass cuttings from my parents.

its all about balence grass cutting will make thinks rot much quicker.try adding ripped up news paper and card bored. :wink:

We put ripped newspaper into our compost bin and mix it with grass clippings to give a more balanced compost. Some shredded cardboard works well if mixed also.

Anybody who uses a compost bin should check theirs for signs of rat infestation. Apparently there has been an upsurge in the amount of rats last year and they like nothing better than using a nice warm, dry compost bin as a home. I have had rats using both of mine, the little blighters even gnawed into the top of one of the plastic compost bins.

i have three compost bins which wasnt anough last year at all.

we had four field mice in our compost bag that was being stored in the greenhouse last year. they got under the smallest of gaps under the door and chewed through the bottom of the bag. it was a dead give away when we saw a little pile of compost and trail leading to the bag

we managed to catch them all with effort into boxes and took them half a mile away onto waste land only to find out you need to take them at least a mile away as they can smell their way back...apparently!......2 weeks later we found another one or was it one of our previous mice that had avoided the owls and got back?!..we compost anything we can. layer up the compost with newspaper, garden waste apart from those pesky dandelions..tea bags, food waste, though i have heard that there is certain food waste that is against the law to now compost.... any extra grass that won't fit in we take down to the recycling depot at calne who turn it into compost which you can then buy back....

I reckon I've still got a rat in the bottom of my compost bin because all the bottom is being dug out by something. I'm going to clear this compost bin soon anyway so if there is a rat he'll either have to move on or get a spade round his head.
