Christianity and SchoolsChristianity and Schools
Should we still, in the 21st Century, have our places of education allied to an organisation that teaches oppression as a way of life which goes against Government guidelines and social laws? This organisation is based upon confused writings that profess this planet being no older than 6000 years old despite concrete evidence that it is more likely to be 4.3 billion years old. Should we subject our children to fairy stories about how the world was created in 6 days and tell them that it is factual - yet teach them a totally different set of events in science classes? I find it totally unfathomable that in this day and age we still teach our children scientific facts which are based on hard evidence yet combine them with ancient myths and legend.

in reality the scenario you paint does not happen. schools teach, poorly in my mind, about all faiths many of them which it appears would not support our way of life.
all schools are supposed to hold a daily act of collective worship, it a legal requirement, but most of them (the schools) have not done so for years.
while I do not attend any church i do accept that most do introduce personal standards to children which I do find acceptable.

RE at the schools my boys attned is taught across all faiths, it does not however include a section for humanists ala Richard Dawkins who, in spite of its potential anti religious nature looks at the situation from a scientific view.

Bit narrow-minded surely? What's wrong with visiting a mosque? It's hardly going to sway someone's faith to see places of worship for other faiths.
To put the boot on the other foot, how would you feel if Muslims had the same opinion? It's hardly going to foster tolerance for others is it if they refuse to visit churches with the same reasoning...

It's more about the christian values than anything, love thy neighbour, helping others etc ....
Though i guess this is not just in christianity ?!
Science was once asked to prove that god doesn't exist and to prove desicively that the big bang happened ....... they couldn't

When I was looking at a school to send my older son to in calne, back in the 1990s, the two main faith schools, Holy Trinity and St Edmunds were in the top 20 in Wiltshire.
Dunstan and Priestley occupied the bottom 2 places in Wiltshire. Now, religion or not, what school would you want to send your child to?
The only criteria that made them different was I had to prove church attendance .....why was there such a big difference in performance other wise?
Children that go to church can't surely be smarter? OR maybe the fact that church going parents are possibly less likely to be divorced so maybe the children have a more secure upbringing, hence better school results???

What is Christian values? Stoning an adulterer? Oppressing minorities?
You all make very valid points but what I was trying to get at is why does this country still feel the need to have religions involved at a fundamental level at all? I have no problem with a lesson teaching kids all about different religions which forms (mainly third world) some countries cultures, but to base a kids education on just one religion and talk about it as fact I think is ridiculous. I find it exasperating when my kids come home from school and your talking about science or nature and they suddenly come up with the statement that god created whatever you were looking at. I then politely tell them that no, he/she/it did not create it but it is either created by a natural scientific way or simply evolved as a way of changing to suit its environment. They are then left slightly confused because they are being told several versions of how things come into being. Why not leave the fairy stories at home and stick to the facts!!
Here's how ridiculous the bible is when it comes to stating something: Click here.
This is a slightly more satirical view of what constitutes prayer but isn't far from the truth.

The likely hood is that they are a lot more closer to proving the big bang theory than proving the Guy in the sky exists.
