chippenham,20mph zoneit was repoted on the gazette site that councilour bill doulas has called for chippenham to become a 20mph zone though out.
I find this absoultly daft london road is bad anough as it is with the traffic calming and you are lucky to reach 20 mph.
certain inner estate roads fair anough but how about bath road, hunger down and the road which leads to the moter way.
i can not see how they do this and lookat a traffic limet for the whole town when each section is so different.

sorry how can an issue relating to Chippenham be applicable to this site www.calnetalk.com?
we have had to play second fiddle to Chippenham for far to long, I have no comment about what they do in their town!

This section is calne talk and surrounding areaS I WOULD SAY chippenham is a surrounding area what does affect quite a few members on here.
i also remind you that it is a open forum anything can and will be discussed .
just because this dosnt affect you dosnt mean that it dosnt affect others.

I go to chippenham alot (lets face it if you want to buy something other than food, you have to go somewhere)
But just because they put a speed limit in force, you will still get prats speeding whatever the limit!

the London road (old A4) in/out of Chippenham is cramed with parked cars in places (closer to town), while further out there is a road calming/priority system.
I work on the other side of Chippenham, and make the trip to and from Calne everyday. I use the bypass. The only time I use the old road is when I need to get diesel (they are usually the cheapest place around here). So putting in a 20mph limit on the old road would make much difference to me, but like a previous post said, you are lucky to get over 20mph even now.
Maybe in dangerous spots, very narrow roads, schools etc, there might be justification for 20mph zones. But I dont see the point in doing the whole town. Keep in mind that it was reported on local radio in recent weeks that the gov in the past years has rejected traffic lights that stay green when it is safe to do so - so cars use more fuel, and so people need to buy more fuel than they would otherwise need to. Nice bit of extra tax for the gov. Having a blanket 20mph rule over all towns would also mean reduced mpg, high fuel consumption (and more Co2 output), thus your fuel bill goes up, and the gov collects more tax in the process. Is this the real reason for 20mph

Sorry to be a pain but I have moved this topic into the General Chat area of the forum because it is not a "Calne" topic.
Cheers.

I can understand the need for a 20mph limit outside school areas but putting a blanket ban on a whole town for cars doing over 20mph is a bit severe. Where do you stop with a law like this?

the next step is to either stop car using certain roads, or cut the limit to 10mph. Or go back to having a man with a red flag walk in front. All of these are much safer than a 20mph, so why dont they introduce them.

There are some places in Chippenham that need a 20mph limit at certain times of the day, for example Hardenhuish lane and Hungerdown Lane between the hours of 8-9 am and 3-4 pm when kids are going to and from school, some of them are still asleep when crossing the road
As soon as kids are in school speed limits could go back to 30 mph.
There are im sure signs that can display vairiable speed limits that the council could install, Lets face it who wants to drive through Chippenham at 3.00 in the morning at 20 mph
