CCTV in CalnePeter Wrote: (click here)
| Quote: | Calne has more than its fair share and almost had more. The council thankfully dropped plans to upgrade the towns camera's, saving a cool £100,000.
Our town precept would have risen by 85% instead of the unacceptable 33%.

With the new work that is going on in the Phelps Parade bit will they not grasp the nettle and install some CCTV cameras rather than fit them retrospectively at a later date? Calne will eventually install these cameras so are they part of the works?

there is or was a camera in Phelps Parade and there are many already sited throughout the town centre. the refurhbishment of Phelps Parade is being carried out by the Wiltshire Council not the town council. it is the town council who install the cctv.
there are a team of volunters who operate the cctv system at certain times of the week but more are always wanted.
the cost of the cctv system is included in the town precept and the costs are in the 10's of thousands of pounds. the was a move to upgrade to digital and increase the numbers of camera's. this would have cost in the region of £100,000 to do. our town precept would have had to increase by approx 85% to raise the extra money.
this in my oinion would have been a step to far given the problems that many people have at this time. I would also questin why we need all these camera's when we already have more per head of population than practically any other country in the world!
George Orwell's 1984 or what?

Are you saying that it costs £10ks to maintain the existing CCTV system or to just buy it? And where did the £100,000 figure mentioned come from? Either seem like an awful lot considering how much half-way decent systems from companies like Maplin cost.

Given that you say you don't know how many cameras there are, and that anyway there's been recent press calling into doubt the actual number of cameras in the UK (saying it may have been overestimated by a million), how can you possibly state with any authority that Calne has too many cameras?

I think, as far as I can remember, there are some 16 camera's around the town/town centre. yes the annual cost is in the 10's of thousands of pounds. this can be checked out by submitting a question to the town council under the freedom of information act.
The town councils finance committee, so I am told, was going to submit a budget, last November, to include the additional camera's and up grading to digital. This I understand was going to cost approx £100,000+.
The finance committee decided, rightly so in my opinion, to reduced the budget by removing the up grading. The budget, on a like by like basis, still went up by 33%.
CCTV costs money to install and to run. I do not doubt the figures about the nuber of camera's in the UK you can see them about where ever you go if you look for them!

I would have thought that Phelps Parade would need a good quality camera for the amount of thugs that congregate there late on a Friday or Saturday night.

as a previous post said, I dont think they have any people to monitor the camera's. So they are pointless. I remember seeing some months ago an advert in the local paper asking for volunteeres to do this task.

I refer to a previous entry, there are volunters who do monitor the cctv footage but more are always required.
If anyone is interested contact the council on 01249 814000
