Calne Wikipedia

On the Calne wikipedia, it says the population of Calne is 13,606. Now when I was at good old JBS, I did a geography study into Calne, and at the time Calnes populous was about 14,000 over about 5,000 addresses. (I can't remember exact figures. It was 20 years ago.)
This info iirc, came from either the 1981 census or the 1991 census.
What is the population now?

It mentions Deceuninck as the towns largest employer. It does not mention that most of its staff are from out of town cause the locals are too lazy to work there themselves.  Evil Mind  Roll eyes

It also mentions the name of what I have always called the cenotaph. (above the white horse in Cherhill) Calling it the Lansdowne Monument. I did hear it's proper name for it, and I am not sure Lansdowne Monument is what it is called.

I think its proper title is an obelisk. The Egyptians built loads of obelisks for some bizarre reason. The reason for the Cherhill monument is that it marked the outermost boundary of Lord Landsdownes estate. I could be wrong on that assumption but that is always what I have been told.

When I went up there last year, it did have writing on the base saying that it was a memorial to someone (I forget who) erected by Lord Lansdowne so I think that is probably a correct description.

The Lansdowne Monument was built in the 1840's to the design of Sir Charles Barry (architect of the Houses of Parliament) to commerate Sir William Petty (1623-1687) economist and inventor, a 17th century ancestor of the Landsdowne family of Bowood House.

This gentle rise is the highest point between London and Bristol - England is a very flat country!

NICE....

Also wikipedia is not an accurate site to use for information !

Anyone can post any article they want on it, it's not really checked for accuracy either. It's just a place to find basic information that has been published by the public.

We're not allowed to use it as a reference on any of the work i'm doing on my uni course .......

that's right.. the whole thing can be edited by anyone..

but that does mean that if you see any mistakes or think something should be up there, then it's easy to add to!

surprisingly enough North Wilts District Council state the population of Calne is 21,640! I thought it was nearer to 15,000 but we will know for certain when the next census is carried out in 2011.

The Calne precept (tax) is based on approx 5,400 houses so based on 4 per house the district may be correct.

The monument was errected by the Lansdowne family but I have always known it as Cherhill Monument!

I thought it was about 15,000, then the new houses were built, i'm guessing about 1000 of them so, it's probably not far off 20,000 now.

My grandad sat on the very top of the Cherhill monument.
It was on the floor though when they rebuilt it not sure when.
I have a bricklaying trowel that was used to repoint it.
