I can trace part of my family tree back to a man who was born in Bishops Cannings in 1571. His descendants moved to Calne about 100 years later and one part of our family has resided in and around Calne ever since.

GTB~: I am most impressed. I am from pretty mixed stock I think. The oldest claim I know of to be from Britain's soil is a butler of Lord Bath. The body found in Cheddar Caves was dated as being 9,000 years old and he was related to the butler. I guess if anyone in UK was about to start a truly nationalist group demanding all foreigners go home, it could be him!
I know that most of the blue eyed, blonde haired people around come from the Saxons who didn't have a great deal to do here until the Romans left in about 5th Century ad. 500 years before that was the Romans, and 500 years or so before them were the Celts. The Scots came from the Middle East originally, and the Normans who claim aristocracy here came originally from Scandinavia and possibly from Russia before that.
I can trace back to my grandfather's father on my mother's side. I know nothing about him much. I have some of his WW1 medals and am proud to have them as well.

I think if people researched their family tree connections they would soon find that there would be a few extra nationalities falling out of the branches from that tree. My Great Grandmother (my Paternal grandfathers mother) is probably Irish so as thoroughbred Englishness goes my claim is slightly tarnished by this fact - although I certainly do not see it this way. I quite like the fact that I may be 1/8th Irish. I have been researching my family tree for over 15 years now and have even joined the D.N.A database for my family surname in creating a huge global genetic family link. I may even have family connections with a certain member on here who is also a local councilor: Mr Dolman. (Peter, if you want my reasoning please PM me.)

I thought that the Scots originated from the Scotti tribe from Ireland around 2000 years ago? I suppose they themselves would have originated from somewhere in the middle east (as did we). With all this modern tribalism, people stating that they are either English, Scottish or Welsh rather than being British, you have to remember that we all originated far away from these fair islands.

My mother has traced her family back to the early 1800's.
I have often though about trying to trace both sides of my family, but they are quite wide spread and wouldn't know where to start.
My mother's side are from Sheffield and Devon and My father's side is from the Midlands, and unfortunately my grandmother's maiden name is very common.
I know the origins of the surname
Mine is Anglo-Saxon, meaning to Settle
My mother's maiden name is Anglo-Scandinavian, meaning Warrior
My Paternal Grandmothers is Anglo-Saxon meaning to Smite
My Maternal Grandmother is Anglo-Saxon meaning Priests Cottage

I am also heavily into Geneology.
I have researched all 4 sides of my grandparents family names and beyond.
I have got back as far as the 1600's on one side but have found links to the 1500's, these just need researching more. I also have a link back to the 1299's on another side, they had a manor as well. They were they Hyde family !.
As for anyone famous, well, The Hydes were very famous, one of the relatives had a palace (Clarendon Palace).
The other famous relatives were the Maskelyne Family, Nevil was the Astronimor Royal and Jasper was one of the most famous Magicians of his time ......
They are all local !. I have only found one direct ancester outside of Wiltshire so far going back over 400 years. So i guess i could claim my fair share of English heritage, though i married a 1/4 welsh person, so thats messed up my childrens English blood lines a little !

I reckon if we were all dogs here I'd be the mongrel.
I could be really catty and say things about bitches and all kinds of other stuff, but I'll pass on that and show how pleasant my temperament is, while wagging my tail.

Ok, here's a question:
What makes you English? Or Scottish, Welsh, German, etc?
a) Is is the fact that your paternal line of the family has been resident for 3 or more generations?
b) You are "English" because that is what it states on your passport no matter how long your residency or lineage?
Can you call your self Welsh or German, for example, just because you have a tenuous link with that particular country?

Here's irony, go back far enough and we ALL descend from travellers/gatherer\hunters/nomads.

Exactly, Geddi but what makes you English?? Some people were born in this country and maybe second generation but they still don't see themselves as English?
I refer you to my previous question:

GTB: OK, I'll answer, though I will doubtless be pounced upon by some...
English comes from Angles. English are basically coming from a land where 'Gg', pronounced 'Ng' was all. Add the letter 'I' and you have an extremely powerful addition to a language and a culture. Stand .. ing. Sit .. ing. Eat .. ing.
Ing to Eng is a small step.
England... YAY!
We be where 'IT' is at!
East Denmark, to be concise. This is where the Angles came from, from whence England got its name.
(ahem... has she gone yet? Keep smiling)

What are we and where do we come from. Archeologists believe we are all descended from Central Kenya making us all Africans. Theologians believe we are all descended from Adam who lived in the Garden of Eden which biblical historians believe was situated somewhere in the valley of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers making us all Iraqi's which you could say means that the recent war was in fact to reclaim our homeland. Now how ridiculous are both of those statements your home is where your heart is whereever that may be.
