BYE ELECTIONSFollowing the resignation of David Bland & John Ireland there will have to be 2 bye elections. These are likely to be held in the new
year.
Are we likely to see a "flag flying" candidate or a candidates representing other lobby groups.
Now is the time for all you strong minded people out their to put your money where your mouth is.
Come on don't be scared you will only need to give up approx 10 hours a week of your own time without pay. You will be criticised for anything, phoned up at any time by people expecting you to perform miracles.
Oh, just one more thing, you must of course rely on having enough family and friends to get the required number of votes so you can become a paragon of virtue and use the title Councillor.
ARE YOU UP FOR IT?

In a couple of years, i'll certinaly be interested in being more involved in this.
But with a 1yr old and a 4yr old, full time job and wife who works evenings ....... it's just not viable at the moment.
In couple of years .........

I would love to do it.but i do think that there is far to much talk and not anough action brought on by red tapein the council.
i also dont have the temper for it..
if however mr baggs dicides to it then he would get my vote every time.
as it stands there is no one in the council what i would vote for at presant.

Local Lass how many of the present councillors do you know well enough to assess how competant they are at the job. Like any group of 19 picked at random there are some good ones and some not so good.
They all have different experience and skills and all bring their own talents to the table, are they the right ones for the job that the rub.

you would be surprised. about ten for definate .
with the one who i dont know thats exactley the point i dont know them to me they are just a name.
in my view a calne counciler should be someone who puts him or her self out there not just a name on a piece of paper.
very few do that who are willing to actully say no i dont agree in what ever is proposed.
if the council get there selfs in and amonst the people of calne they would have more repect for a start.
for what its worth peter if you ran for council and won i dont think you would do a bad job :thumbl:

Most of the town councillors are (or should be) better known in the wards they represent, they are after all the people who voted for them. People living in Lickhill are not likely to know any of the councillors in Quemerford and why should they.
The councillors who "shout and scream" and get there pictures in the papers every week are not normally the ones who get jobs done. Quite often its those working quietly away in the back ground that are the big achievers.
So I would ask you to take every thing you hear or read with a pinch of salt.

That clearly would not include your most excellent posts on this forum, wouldn't it , Peter? 8)

I of course try to be as factual and as honest as possible, but you should try and get as much independant confirmation as possible from other sources.
I always give what I believe is correct but it is from my perspective which may be different from others perspective.
There is no right or wrong just a different point of view.

By Elections??Any honest person wanting to stand should be asking themselves if they can make a difference. And, they should live on the ward they want to represent? Anyway I hear there are a couple of other Councillors about to resign!
Maybe someone should be asking why good people are leaving rather than ignoring it? If it's about bad apples in a barrel then get them out!

It's a sad day when you can only identify the councillors with integrity when they resign from the council. But maybe we should not believe this until it happens. (No offence intended, Short Noisy Blonde.) :ummm?:

It does not follow that because a person resigns from a position that it means that person has integrity.
I agree that candidates for the town council should live in the ward they represent. The diffilculties arise when no one from the ward is prepared to stand.
There are rumours about the possibility of further resignations but they are no more than rumours,
It must be remembered that this council opted to extend its life past the date of the next proposed election originally due in 2011. This has been extended to 2013 to coincide with the Unitary Authority elections due in that year.
These bye-elections will be a rare opportunity for a change of councillors and for the voters of Calne to make their thoughts known.
It is a well known fact that we get the representatives (councillors) we deserve!

OK each will make up their own mind but IMO in this case they, at least, had the courage of their convictions and stood by their beliefs.
Contrast that with the two you quoted as saying they didn't really agree but had to accept the precept budget. I'm not going to get the chance but I know for whom I would rather vote. As Andy I said it is not a popularity contest and they left the council with their honesty and IMHO, integrity in tact.

OK i may be a little lacking knowledge on this right now but am i right in saying that. ....
Because two councilors didn't get there way , they decided to leave.
Seems a little lacklustre to me. You win some you lose some.
Surely as someone representing a ward of the town, if a vote goes against you then, you carry on and make the best of a situation in any form that you can.
Just giving up because you dont like others decisions seems rather negative and weak to me .........
