Is the Policing adequate in the town? Should there be a more visible force of police during the weekend nights when there is more likelihood of trouble spilling out into the streets at kicking out time?

I would like to know that we have a police station with police in it 24 hours aday so that if there ever is trouble there will be minimun time in getting to us.and that police do not need to come from other towns.
in the day time i think there has been a increased police presance in the town quite a few times i have seen community police walk the streets which is reasuring.
needed more at night though and not just in the town centre.

the PCSO's finish at 11:00pm and there are times when there is at best 1 policemean for the whole of Calne at worst we don't have any police coverage. there may be a police station but it has not been open for many years.

yes we do want more police coverage and the town councillors have been calling for more for many, many years to no avail.

the reality is that for most of the time the police which react to telephone calls, assuming that they do of course, come from Chippenham. there are police in silver street but its just a sign on sign off at best.

gone are the days when it was open for the best part of each day. as are the days when the police lived in the town they served. there is a house at the top of Bryans Close Road, near the army cadets hut, which was the police sargents house. the home for many years of Sargent Pitman, a man you crossed at your peril!
the worst case scenario was being escorted home by him and listening while you parents were lectured about behaviour. a good man but one you did not cross!

Indeed it is something we need Peter.

I grew up in a police house in Calne (no names) and the idea worked back then, when the police had more power and respect.

The trouble now is that the policemen themselves have been reduced to nothing more than frustraigted pen pushers.

They want to get out there and get those pesky crim's but government has restricted them so much ... that it's almost impossible for them to make an arrest without worrying if they're going to be sued for manhandling (putting hand cuffs on) by the crim in question.

As for living in there own town ...... some do !. Though these days they are advised to live in another town.

This is something that needs attention Policing levels can be alterred based on the public demand and of course crime levels.

The excellent highly visible policing last Hallowe'en was an examp[le of ho public pressure can be used to up levels of policing the more peopl who write in the more the more things can be changed. It is public pressure which will drive this up the agenda.

Chuck if only that was true, policing levels in my (cynical) point of view is down to ££££££££££££. The police authority have limited resources and coupled with the ever growing sophistication of crime they have little left over for "beat" coppers.

When you receive your council tax demand it will include a breakdown which will show how much goes to the police authority, if we want better policing (and we all do?) will we be prepared to pay more?

I fear the answer will be no!

Perhaps the Estimated £250,000 for the provision of "another" hall would be better spent on another dedicated police officer for the next 10 years in Calne ?!

Nice idea but not feasible and it also sets a dangeroues precedent.
If the town funded one policeman who would that person report to and what if they were needed elsewhere?

The council did part fund 2 PCSO's for a couple of years, the benefits of which was not proven.

The section 106 monies (£335,00) has already been given to the town council and they have decided to build an extention to the Beaversbrook sports complex, subject to planning.

The Council has helped Calne with a grant for CCTV but it will be the job of the new Council to deliver the Policing Calne needs. All areas in general would like more policing and the budget as ever is stretched but there are ways to get business to help with sponsorship etc.. maybe a Town BID (Business Improvement District) could help.

Excuse my ignorance but how would a Business Improvement District help obtain better policing.
