Another shop closing

the bycycle shop in town is closing the signs went up yesterday (thursday 24th june) which is a great shame.
a specialist shop like that you would expect to be able to survive especially with the number of people who have bikes. I suspose its another case of people either shopping on the internet or going out of town.

Good on them for trying and I hope that they have not lost to much money in the process.

i only bought a bike on monday from there, damn my 8 week free service lol (well they told me before I bought it that they were shutting)

Yeah it was a good shop though
Mark Wilkins

What a shame.  I bought my daughter a new bike there only last month as I prefer to shop locally whenever I can.  Sadly its likely they're another victim of the internet and big business squeezing prices.

Could have got cheaper bikes elsewhere, but then wouldn't necessarily have got the quality of service I received locally.
Chepfer

That really is a shame, it brought alot of people to calne from outlying places and made it a stopping place for cyclists from chippenham and surrounds !

Perhaps the owners of the shops sould try and reduce the rates for businesses so they can afford to stay........

What a loss !

BTW since everyone seems to playing the 'victim of the internet' card it's worth pointing out that Peddlers are also an online shop.
Biggles

they sell bike bits on ebay too
Local lass

i went in there last year as i was looking for a bike for my son who is 9.cheapest they had was 179 so i went to halfords 70 quid
Biggles

i got mine in Tesco in Swindon, 15 speed mountain bike half price while stocks last for £40
Local lass

exactley biggles the problem is the prices why spend more than you need to.if shops cant compete then they should close and cut there losses .to now have a successfull local shop they need to offer something different .the olive tree is storming cos its unique.
djq

It's not an issue of matching supermarket prices on cheap and cheerless bikes. (Google for Bicycle Shaped Object). That £40 Tesco bike won't last through one set of tyres.
A decent basic bike without suspension will cost close to £200 even from an online discount shop.

thats utter rubbish, i got that bike well over 18 months ago and its still going well.

i went in that so called specialist bike shop at the time and the prices they quoted were way beyond what i payed for my first car [/quote]

when you are buying for growing kids though proberly only one set of tyres is all you need.

Though i would say , i dont think they were tryig to compete with the likes of Halfords.

They offered specialist high end bikes and a good range of accessories.

It's fine if you want a bike thats heavy, uncomfortable and doesn't matter if it gets ruined, go to halfords.

But if you want to get into cycling and have something that will last for many many years, be fast, comfortable and easy to handle ...... then it was a good shop to have ........   just a shame that the clientelle weren't here in enough numbers to keep them going,
rosco

You do tend to get what you pay for and if you're happy to pay £40 for a bike, then don't be surprised when the only places left that sell them are Tescos: how can you reasonably expect a small local shop to make any kind of margin with a price like that?
djq

There's a nice little bike shop in Wootton Bassett that sells a range of basic quality bikes from manufacturers you've heard of starting at around £180.
Personally if I wanted a really cheap bike I'd go second hand.

Well done.

Biggles and Local Lass: were the "bikes" the same as in Peddlars?

It is like saying "Audi have cars that cost £30000, but I got a car from Ford that cost £20000".

I did buy my daughters bike from there, and also other bits and bobs.

Nice chap too.
Biggles

ive no idea now if they were similar, it was a bike no suspension or computers or gps just something to ride from a to b

would never buy an expensive one with the crime rate so high

sold the bike now anyway got 85 quid for it at boot sale so cant be bad eh
Local lass

my point being that peddlers is ideal if you are very much into biking .but if like me you wanted it for a 9 year old who will out grow it in 6 months ,chuck it around whilst playing with his mate s i would sooner spend 40 quid at tescos than i would 160 at peddlers
Chepfer

Well put accross Local and i have to agree with you.

Though i paid £3 for my boys last bike from Dauntseys carbbot sale ...... and guess what ........ Yea, he loves it.
Chuck

I was shocked too it was a busy bike shop shame!

Chuck

Looks possible that we may have a new person for the furniture shop.

Chuck
Chepfer

whos that then chuck.......... another weatherspoons type thing ?
Chuck

CAn't say at this point but not Weatherspoons or a pub but it vcame from the Town Council so will have to leave it to them to announce if it comes to anything.

Cheers,

Chuck
