Annual Parish Meeting

The Annual Parish Meeting was held on Monday 6th April in the Calne Town Hall.
This is a meeting where any of the residents of the town can raise questions and even propose and vote on a resolution calling on the Council to take action on a subject. The vote is not binding on the council but will give councillors an indication of what people think.
If enough voters ask for one a Parish meeting can be forced on the council at any time!

There are 19 town councillors but only 16 attended the Annual meeting. There was approximately some 20 members of the public attending.

The first public statement was made by a new community group who were advising the council of their exsistance. Most of the group were members of CAIAC but have broken away as they were unhappy with the way it was being run.

There was a petition from parents/resident of Priestley School requesting additional traffic calming outside the school. The council accepted the petition but it should be noted that it has no powers to fulfill the request.

I as expected asked 2 questions. The first was a question to the town clerk asking for details of what action has happened towards providing a childrens playground on the Northend Playing field.
She is to reply in writing, details will be posted when to hand.

The second question was for Councillor Alan Hill. I asked him to justify his decision to abstain from voting for the budget in November after he had persuaded others to do so and had forcefully spoken for it during the debate.
His response was decidedly weak and not convincing, why he changed his mind is still a mystery!

Councillor Hill is standing for the new Unitary Authority in June for the Calne South & Cherhill Ward and I would recommend that voters in that ward listen carefully to what he says. He has a history of changing his mind before being elected in 2007 as a Conservative, he had stood first as an Independant and then  Lib Dem in the previous 24 months.

We need strong people to look after this towns interest for too long our representatives have left us worse off!

At the Parish meeting I met 2 Calnetalk visitors and would thank them for supporting the site. I still think that your opinions are just as valid as mine or anyone else. Get registered and lets hear from you!

i thought that had a load of traffic calming outside as it is as there is the humps and the road narrows.what more could they get?

we did not exchange names so they remain anonymous while I do not, a side effect of my stand on using my real identity.

yes there is some traffic calming already in place but that is not enough and over 500 people have signed a petition to that effect. the parents and local residents have got to gether to demand more traffic calming.

their action is the start of a process which if there is enough momentum will result in the required action. it does need people to drive it forward and takes time and energy.
