Diplomacy for a serious game, Settlers for a more light-weight one.

Risk is my Favourite also.
Monopoly can get boring. I remember having a game where it took 6 hours for the first person to go bankrupt. The second was two hours later. We never found out how the rest of us did. We were too bored to care. If I remember correctly, the bank even ran out of money.

I liked the one where you had to spend all your money and the one who finished with the lowest ... won.

I see in one report recently that Snakes and Ladders  is supposed to be a great way of teaching your kids maths. I also remember from a few years ago that Snakes and Ladders was banned in one school because children may become depressed if they continually went down snakes whilst their friends climbed the ladders. Shocked  How times change! Laughing

Bear - You are not allowed to call them that anymore, it's offensive, they have to be called "Jolly Dolly" now not the other term  Rolling Eyes
