I went to the Barge for a spot of lunch on Saturday. As a few of you will know it's sited right next to the Kennet and Avon canal so you get to watch barges go up and down the water whilst you eat - which is new experience for some.
I didn't bother with a starter but I opted for the pan fried duck served with spicy plum sauce, roasted roots and sautéed potatoes. The duck came out with just a tinge of pink in the middle which was perfect and the roasted root vegetables - swede, parsnip and carrot - were also done to a tee. The spicy plum sauce was slightly tarte which contrasted quite nice with the sweetness of the parsnips and went well with the duck. I'm a fussy sod when it comes to restaurant food but I would happily give this dish 8/10.
I didn't bother having a sweet so I had cheese and biscuits instead. You had the usual wedges of Cheddar, Stilton, smoked Bavarian and a cranberry Cheddar (slightly Christmassy?) along side grapes and julienne strips of celery.
The pan fried duck was £11.25 and the cheese board was £5.25. The beer - I was drinking Wadworth's "Malt & Hops" which was a nice pint - was fairly reasonable as well.
There are two good things about the Barge Inn; it's just a 5 minute walk from my house (I can see the pub from my front room window) and they also have one of the most attractive young barmaids I have seen in a very long time. :thumbl:

| not been in there in years, i used to go to another pub just a little up the road think it was called the Brewery, is that still there also |

That is my local, Biggles - it's about 100 yards from my house. All the locals use the Brewery and leave the Barge for the tourists.

| often nipped in there on way from Trowbridge will have to pop in and have a nosey. i remember they did good old fashioned english pub grub piled high and very cheap (must be about eight to ten years ago) |

The pub has changed hands three times in the last ten years but they still do a good bit of food - although on a much smaller scale than the Barge. They still do proper cider though which, as you may well know, is called "whacky". It's nearly orange in colour and you cannot see through the glass it's so murky - it is very nice stuff though and can knock you off your feet in no time at all. The Brewery was the last pub (that I can think of) where you could get a good plate full of home cooked food and a pint and still have change from a fiver - that was 10 years ago. How times have changed.

biggles we used to do that every friday go to the brewary .they did a cracking homemade steak and kidney pie,peas and chips for 350.sat in frount of the roaring fire.i think gorden had it then.
i loved thta pub it was a proper village pub.then we used to play bar billiards down stairs.
i went there a few months back its sadly turning a little commercial now.
