Has anyone gone to the summer solstice at Stonehenge before? What with all these druids, white witches and warlocks it sounds more akin to a Harry Potter convention nowadays,

Happy Solstice all. It happened at 11-59pm on 20-6-08 this year. Earlier than normal, quite rare to be earlier than the 21st.

I have been to Stonehenge for the Solstice, but not since the early 1980s when there was a free festival on there. Calne library recently got in a DVD of Hawkwind playing live at Stonehenge 1984 (I think it was 1984??) which was the last year it was allowed to happen (Thanks Maggie T. Another liberty taken!)

Nowadays, I have no inclination and have not returned since 1984. Avebury is more the place for me. It's local, bigger, older and more space if you need it. A lot less tense as well, from what I can gather from those who do attend the Stonehenge. That one is more like a rave I think these days, with Druids. (What ever druids are doing in the midst of man-made structures I have no clue! Traditionally they shunned man-made and went for natural openings in the woods - glades. Now they seem to claim virtual ownership of all the henges around.)

Aparantly they are a friendly bunch at Stonehenge this time of year, and even the police tend to be chilled these days, or so I hear. Perhaps the drugs are better?
