In the NHS, funds are used regularly to perform operations enlarging women's breasts. Used as fertility treatments. Used to research extremely rare conditions. Used to keep people alive on expensive drugs when all quality of life has already gone.

I am not a total arse and I am not totally callous but I can not help thinking that half this country's problems stem from the expectation that the state will resolve people's problems for them, especially within the NHS, no matter what the problem and what the cost.

The NHS was set up to provide basic health care for all. Now it tries to be a panacea for all regardless of what.

1500 breast implant patients a year at a conservative cost of something like: - £30 million, if each operation costs only £2000 each, which is unlikely to be so low.

If you pay taxes then people should expect help from the nhs.
for me breast enlargements is a mis use of money however breast reconstruction is not,.
I would not say that that helping people to concieve is a mis use either.

The nhs could cut half if not more of there costs by being more selective on who they treat.

What really nirks me if the nhs is struggling ,yet we can afford as a country to pledge 100 million for malaria and 100 million to help build iraq .also god knows how much to host the olympics. Evil Mind

There are a lot of non-essential operations that are carried out in the NHS. Breast implants, tattoo removal, fertility treatment, etc.

Fertilty treatment should not be paid for on the NHS, it is not a human right to ask for the state to pay for it. It is also not a right to be able to have a child.

Breast implants in conjunction with reconstructive surgery is perfectly ok where disease or accidents is involved but should be stopped for purely vanity.

Tattoos, if you paid to have them etched into your arm, you can damn well pay for them to be removed as well!

GTB: I tend to agree with all you said here. I pay tax into the NHS and am happy to do so, yet I am not happy when it is wasted on such dodgy issues as tattoo removal, breast implants, fertility treatment, self inflicted wounds of many kinds.

My ex husband, never worked in his sad little life, had the bags removed from under his eyes, all paid for by you and me :evil: for no other reason than vanity! Dont get me started Big Smile

some people wont/ dont want to change. all the time he his getting all the benefits he can, he wont change! It makes me so cross, he treats his daughter like a trophy only to pick up and take notice of when he remember he has one!
He has a council flat in chippenham (everything paid for by you and me) but he lives with his new partner in peterbrough, she works but he still claims all he was getting before :evil:

Having thought about earlier posts on this subject, what about if somebody harmed themselves through a psychological relapse and didn't conciously know they were doing it? Would this self harm rule apply if you happened to become rather tipsy and fell over and broke your leg?

I don't suppose there are any hard and fast rules on what is and what is not a misuse of NHS resources. Once you weigh in the psycholical factor a lot of previously wastefull cases become necessary for the patients mental as well as the physical wellbeing.
